3 Social Media Basics You Should Be Constantly Reviewing

About four weeks ago, our social media team conducted our annual review. This is where we looked at what social media worked, what didn’t, and what we need to improve on (you can read more about the process here). It’s one of my favorite things to do since it helps realign our social media content with our church’s mission.

3 Social Media Basics You Should Be Constantly Reviewing

Of course, we don’t just evaluate only one time a year. No, we’re always evaluating what we do and how we could do it better. One way we do this is by asking ourselves three questions about our social media. These three questions force us to make sure we’re following some social media basics and make adjustments accordingly. Here are the questions we ask: (more…)

3 Easy Tips for Making Better Instagram Graphics

Images dominate social media. There isn’t a social media network out there that isn’t trying to find a way to get their users to share more images and interact with their content. If you’re only using text on social media, you’re missing the boat.

3 Easy Tips for Making Better Instagram Graphics

The best way to start using images on social media is to begin using Instagram. It’s very easy to learn, it has a large user base, and it continues to grow every year. As I’ve said before, if I was starting my church’s social media from scratch, it’s the network I would join first.

However, Instagram is about more than just taking selfies and pictures of cappuccinos in your local coffee shop. With some very basic tools, you can create great graphics that will help get our your church’s message. These are graphics like sermon quotes, announcements, or scripture verses and they can add a new twist to your social media and help you gain a whole new audience. (more…)

10 Things I Believe about the Church and Social Media

I’ve been on church staff for almost two years now and I’m having a lot of fun. The more time I spend with our staff and other churches, the more I get excited about the future.

10 Things I Believe about the Church and Social Media

Over these last two years, my opinions and assumptions have changed about social media. What hasn’t changed is my belief that the church can be a force of good on social media. I think the church is a position for God to use social networking for some amazing things. (more…)

5 Online Habits That Will Improve Your Church’s Reach

Have you ever had that you moment where you’ve asked yourself, “Why aren’t more people seeing my content?” You plan, schedule, and research only to find that your social media content has fallen flat. Sure, it reached some people, but not the masses that you hoped for.

5 Online Habits That Will Improve Your Church's Reach

Don’t worry, you’re not the only one who’s felt that way. Most social media directors I know at some point go through moments like this. It’s frustrating and you can feel defeated, but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. (more…)

What Taylor Swift Can Teach Your Church about Social Media

Taylor Swift. She has over 51 million Twitter followers, 20 million Instagram followers and 73 million likes on Facebook. I’d say she’s pretty popular, but more importantly, I would say she’s a master at using social media.

What Taylor Swift Can Teach Your Church about Social Media

Now let’s be clear, I’m under no illusion that Taylor actually does the strategy for her social media. I’m sure she does occasionally post from her account, but we all know there’s a very good marketing machine behind the pop princess. (more…)

6 Things About Social Media Your Pastor Wants You To Know

A lot has been written about what the church’s communications staff wish their pastors knew about social media. I’ve written my fair share of open letters, blog posts and emails encouraging pastors to get online and engage people on various digital platforms, and I still believe pastors need to do this.

6 Things About Social Media Your Pastor Wants You To Know

Of course, there’s the other side of the coin. There are things about social media that our pastors would want us know. While yes, we want them want to engage more online, there are things that are equally as important to pastors. Some of these things may seem small to you, but in their eyes, they can be a big deal. What I Learned from Our Church’s First Week on Snapchat

Snapchat. That word means a lot of different things to a lot of people. To some, it’s seen as the social network you use when you want to do things you don’t want your parents to know about. For others, it’s a quick way to create content you really don’t want to put a lot of time into. For me? It’s been a complete mystery and not high on my list of things I wanted our church to do.

That changed, of course, when I saw this tweet from Cross Point Church. This led me to question what I heard and understood about Snapchat, so I created a personal account and began to play around. After spending some time watching how ESPN’s the X-Games was using it, I was convinced our church need to dive in and give it shot. So how did it go? Well, here’s my take on our first week on Snapchat. (more…)
